I have the hardest time picking out outfits for my everyday activities, and the WORST trying to coordinate family outfits for the family. I created a short guide for taking off some of the stress when planning family outfits.

When planning to start the shopping to look for family outfits for those upcoming pictures it helps to start with Mom,

family outfits will fall into place if moms outfit is ready.

Maxi dresses add movement to the photos, and be a fun prop, and of course they are absolutely stunning!!

Complement each other, don't match each other.

When the group wears the same color, sometimes it can blend together. Coordinate amongst your group.

Aim for earthy tones, natural fabrics, beautiful textures, and clothing that moves with you. Think in terms of tones of:

Blues, earthy, neutrals, and pastels.

Try to choose colors that match the interior of your home. Have a color theme.

Choosing 2-3 colors to build on, then add neutrals.

Reason for the season. Pair colors that complement each other, the surroundings and the time of year.

Spring tones

Spring is the best time to wear pastel colors. Lighter and softer shades are the best for a Spring time photo shoot. It's best to go for whites, beiges, pastels, pinks, or pops of denim.

Summer tones

Summer is the time for beaches and outside fun, so your tones should match that of a sunset, with a splash of warm hues.

Fall Tones

Fall is the time to look to the foliage. Think cozy colors next to a warm fireplace. Its best to opt for teals, burgundy, mustard yellow, browns, and khaki.

winter tones

Winter is the time for jingle bells and hot chocolate. Red is a great color to stand out against the cold. Shades of blues, grays, and whites work too. Textured fabric, and layers make the season bright.

Shades of green look classy year round.

Be comfortable in the outfits you pick out. I want YOU to love what you wear and it matches your personality.

Add different textures and natural fabrics, wool, cotton, and linen. Add layers, like jackets, hats, cardigans, headbands, and scarves.

Don't forget to accessorize.

Props, can be anything from a love seat to a instrument.

Being a lifestyle photographer, the images tell a story. For couple sessions, bringing a umbrella, instrument, or pet can help tell the story of your lives. For a senior session, bringing, a skateboard, truck, or hobby.

What to avoid when looking for outfits.

Avoid anything with large logos or graphics unless it fits with the type of session you are looking for. Logos can be very distracting.

Patterns tend to be overwhelming and make the photos appear too busy.

Subtle smaller patterns work best. Light floral or flannels if they complement the location.

Don't forget, your feet may be in the photo, keep your choice of footwear in mind. Select shoes based on the location.
